Description
The 23000 Series (23000系) is a limited express type EMU operated by Kintetsu Railway since 1994.

Designed in conjunction with Kintetsu's development of a resort and theme park complex in Shima, Mie Prefecture, the 23000 series 'Ise-Shima Liner' was envisioned as the symbol of the company's leisure and tourism facilities in the area. A streamlined exterior was adopted as an evolution of the previous 21000 series, with an enlarged windshield to allow for a dedicated panoramic view deck directly behind the cab. Formations are in fixed 6 car sets operationally, but can be split in two for shunting purposes. The first car on the Osaka/Kyoto side has deluxe seats installed, made up of recliners in a 1+2 configuration. All seats are able to be rotated to face the window, with small tray tables in the armrest able to be deployed while doing so. Saloon seating can be found on the second car, made up of 6 each of two-seaters and four-seaters. The seats are not placed back to back, leaving space to store luggage in-between. The other 4 cars have standard seating in a 2+2 configuration, they also feature recline and have the same 1050mm seat pitch as deluxe cars. There was also a small cafe on the third car, but it was discontinued in 2020 and replaced by vending machines. A total of 6 sets were produced from 1993 to 1995 by Kinki Sharyo. Renewal works were carried out on all cars from 2012 to 2013, about 18 years after they had entered service. The interior panels, seat moquette and flooring were all replaced and with the decorative themes updated to modern concepts. The 23000 series were exclusively used on services from Osaka/Nagoya to Ise-Shima in the earlier years of operation, but have since been expanded to those departing from Kyoto and Nara. All cars are currently in active service.
