A Giant Problem

Beskrivelse
Description:
The last few weeks have seen increasing goblin activity near the village of Neganburg and reports of hostile giants in the vicinity. To make matters worse, the leader of the town militia, Lucas Stormspear, mysteriously vanished from his home last night! With the militia fully occupied by the goblin threat, the town lacks the resources to investigate Lucas' disappearance. Can you find the missing town militia leader and bring stability to the area?

Notes:
  • Level 1 characters will advance to level 16 (higher with UB mod, though I have not tested it with UB). The storyline is linear, with a focus on combat.

  • Be sure to actually read (using the game mechanics) any documents you find to advance the quests. On the PC, this is done by right-clicking the item and selecting "READ". You will need to know the language of the document (or use spells or magic items) to read the text. Magic items to assist reading languages are available throughout the campaign, but knowing Goblin, Giant, and Old Tirmarian languages will make things easier.

  • The party will almost always have access to a rest point, but you may have to travel a little to get there. This is intentional to create tension for the player(s) -- i.e., "should we keep going or go back to rest?" In some cases, there may be consequences to going back to rest (i.e. you should not assume you can go into a monster stronghold, kill half the inhabitants, then leave and come back as if nothing happened). Consequences are more likely if the monster boss is still alive.

  • Many of the encounters will be challenging. Recommend using the 'max hp per level' setting. A party with at least one "tank" with high armor class and a spell caster capable of casting area denial spells like spike growth, wall of fire, etc. will be helpful. As in the original modules, the use of stealth to scout out areas and setup ambushes is a good strategy.

  • I have playtested solo (PC) and co-op (PC-XBox). Please let me know if you find any bugs.

Just finished this up. Thanks for the added campfire in the Goblin Caves. Such a masterful campaign! Five stars! The writing, the nail-biting tight challenge of fights, and generally interesting combats. I could go on and on, but if you like old school gritty D&D, this is a campaign you should check out. Use your resources carefully, sneak and scout as much as you can, and choose your battlefields with an eye for choke points to channel your foes.

I wish there had been a bit more toward the end, especially since I was using UB to go beyond 16. A little more XP before the end would have given me a chance to play with level 20 PCs. Maybe there was XP I missed along the way. Even though I wasn't level 20, the final fight was not as tough as I was expecting, but it is hard to challenge level 19 PCs.

I do want to go back and play this again with a party with some different classes and see how I fare.

buicken: Thanks for the feedback. I found the bug and fixed it in version 1.0.3 - it occurs when the rest spot cave is entered for the first time *after* completing all the required quest items. To continue your game, I think you will need to go back to a save before you entered the cave and then don't enter the cave - just go back to Neganburg. Or go all the way back to a save before the Hill Giant quest started. I don't think 1.0.3 update will fix the quest if it was already started.

yes, it says "return to Fenar", Sebastian died shortly after freeing him, before i could leave the stronghold.

buicken: Does the active quest say "Return to Fenar"? Did Sebastian die on the way back to Neganburg?

Ossie1972: The encounter only triggers if you fail a certain number of skill checks - when I go back into the DM I'll double check the logic and make sure it's working as intended. The encounter is nothing critical and has no effects on the quests

its been pretty fun so far, not to difficult. warlock, gloomstalker, paladin and bladeslinger wizard. I am stuck however. I have finished all the quest points for the hill giants, there are 8 of them including the last one that says return to Fenar. when i do, Fener tells me " come see me after i deal with the hill giants" they are all dead. i have a map to the frost giants, but it doesnt show up. the only thing i didnt do, is save sebastian. he is dead, but the quest is complete. not sure what to do ?

Works well, enjoying the challenge, didn't really know what I was signing up with my party of 4 humans stumbling through a dark cave of seemingly endless goblins. Probably should reconsider my party comp with how far apart rest spots are as some classes don't really seem viable even with extreme ability rationing. Seems like it was intended to use stealth and ambush each fight which is an already overpowered 5e mechanic that I don't use as I find it generally makes challenge irrelevant. I am 4 fights after the goblin boss with no sign of rest so I guess its time to dig deep.
