Description
Overview

This mod is designed to modify and expand upon the gameplay of Elizabeth I to be more powerful, more interesting, and more historically flavorful. Best paired with the Civilizations Expanded mod for balance purposes, one of my favorite mods which unfortunately never got around to overhauling the final batch of leaders.

Cult of the Virgin Queen

Receive one extra Wildcard policy slot in any Government when in a Golden Age. Trade Routes to City-States gain +3 Gold, +1 Food, and +1 Culture for each specialty district at the origin city. +100% yields from plundering Trade Routes. Civic Squares provide Faith equal to their Culture adjacency bonus. Great Writings, Portraits, and Music grant Faith equal to their base Culture.

A New Take on Elizabeth I

The base game's design captures one narrow facet of Elizabeth's reign but her legacy is far more complex than a trade agreement meme and Francis Drake's privateering. In fact, it's difficult to even capture all of the important aspects of her character and accomplishments in one ability without creating a bloated and incoherent monster! My design seeks to deepen her gameplay, highlight the aspects of her rule which are the most important and interesting, and encourage the player to behave much as she would.

Guide the fabled Virgin Queen to victory. Forge your global trade empire, impress your subjects with glorious accomplishments abroad and take them back home to be translated into propagandistic Great Works. With the strength of your treasury and the devotion of your cult of personality, you shall surely triumph over any enemy that dares to challenge the rising star of England.

Bless you for this series of mods, my "but Civilizations Expanded is missing things" mind goblins are finally quieting.

thank you so much for this!!! I love playing with civ expanded but my fav civs are England and Byzantium so it has never feel super complete since they were never updated.

yeah maybe I did focus a bit too much on early wonder construction. I think once you have high population cities to support multiple districts or built a couple of entertainment complexes/ water parks that ability will also become viable.

but hey, I was able to get a +6 Theater Square in my capital. combined with the aesthetics policy card that gives me +12 Culture and Faith on that hex. not as much as I get from my great works overall but still a nice addition

Based on my own playtests, Elizabeth I will become an unstoppable late game powerhouse if you play your cards right. Her playstyle do be a lil quirky though. Wonders help, but I don't think it's strictly necessary to focus so much on them to unlock her potential.

hmm, maybe the extra production on trade routes would be too strong.

also I forgot that you can build entertainment complexes for theater square adjacency.

Thinking about it I had a couple of ideas though:

- Trade routes to city states gain +1 extra Production for each specialty district at the origin city. (This would help immensely with building wonders. And you can shift around traders to those cities that are currently building a wonder.)

- Archaeological Artifacts also grant faith equal to their culture. (This certainly fits England and gives archaeological museums a bit of extra love but I don't know enough about Elizabeth I if it fits her as a leader.)

Love the extra wildcard slot. Love the extra food and culture from trade routes to city states. Love the extra faith from great works.

The extra Faith from the Theater Square's Culture adjacency bonus seems good on paper but during my gameplay I realised that it isn't as strong as I first thought. It's hard to gain Culture adjacency on Theater Squares, you basically only get it from wonders, which are impossible to build on higher difficulties. Overall it feels a bit weak as a feature.

So the early game feels really unfocused between trying to build up a reliable trade network and building enough wonders to get a few high adjacency theater squares. I think building up a trade network is the safer play though.

This was a very meaningful mod to me.

Now instead of drowning in gold coins, I can drown in someone else's wealth and appropriate it for myself while admiring my 24 great works while sipping tea.

England is no longer accepting trade agreements. Everything is now property of my queen.

And at the end of the eras I will look back upon my empire and think to myself: could I have done a Diplomatic victory...? Nah.
