Vietnam Highlands

This map was four of five in a series of 15 x 15 km maps I created for variety and interesting tactical challenges suitable for the 1960s - 90s era of modern warfare.

Inspired by the Khe Sanh hill fights and uses elevation data from the general battle area in Quang Tri province, Vietnam. I used artistic license on the map features such as roads, firebase and village locations due to 15x15km constraint and elevation limits. Some locations were added/selected for balanced gameplay for randomly generated scenarios. The terrain varies from extreme mountain to highland plateau. Vegetation varies from heavy jungle in remote areas, to heavily deforested for key terrain (ridges, hilltops, etc.) to actual cleared vegetation near the friendly firebase intended to represent the region during this timeframe based on photographs I've been able to find. These cleared areas could be used to represent LZs for scenario development. I don't claim this a precise simulation of the actual series of battles, but given the map limitations, it is close enough to appreciate the impact of this terrain on how you fight, and how you are limited in employing some weapons systems. Also, this map is lots of fun.
