Description
Talent 3 (proper spelling TALENT 3) is a family of multiple units developed by the manufacturer Bombardier Transportation. This was taken over by Alstom in 2021, which sold the vehicle platform to Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF). However, the trainsets already produced for ÖBB and not accepted by the latter remain the property of Alstom. The first generation (Talbot light commuter railcars) was built from 1996 by the Aachen-based Talbot wagon factory and then by Bombardier Transportation (replaced by Talent 2). In contrast to their predecessor, the Talent 2, the Talent 3 multiple units are not a new development, but a further development of it, which the Talent 3 resembles visually. In contrast to the second generation, the Talent 3 trains comply not only with German but also European standards.

As a replacement for system tests on two Talent trains operated by SWEG Bahn Stuttgart, Alstom is providing SWEG Bahn Stuttgart with three unapproved Talent 3 trains that were originally intended for ÖBB. These have been in use on the regional express line RE10a/b (Mannheim Hbf-Heilbronn Hbf) since 6 February 2023.

With the introduction of the Deutschlandticket, the STS authorities have seen an increased demand for vehicles for use on the Saale-Thüringen-Südharz network (STS network), as passenger numbers have risen significantly. As a result, the STS authorities commissioned Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland to lease the vehicles from the lessor. The rental agreement covers the rental of three six-car Talent 3 Plus rail vehicles for a period from 3 November 2023, probably until the international timetable change in December 2030. Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland has been using these three vehicles on the Saalbahn, the Halle-Nordhausen-Kassel and Erfurt-Naumburg-Halle routes since 9 December 2023. The lessor will provide the three vehicles from an Alstom vehicle fleet on a rolling basis over the entire rental period and will be responsible for their maintenance.
