You will notice that Fort Smuggle and Grand Pirate Camp has 4 information counters, use them to scout on all 5 faction fleets if you like!

Merchant Galleons are a 50HP 250 Cargo 3 Speed Galleon ship with a ship structure slightly modified to favour you when you defend your ship from boarders, such as favouring your archers and ranged attacks with the help of more barrels on board. Just horrible for general combat as it has only two inventory slots.
