Coal from Sticks

Description
Enables the creation of coal from sticks.

Have you ever wished you could do something with all those sticks?

They're too heavy to trade.

Your carpenter's time is better spent on bows than practice targets.

But we have SO many of them, especially if need to burn tons of wood to coal for ash, to make saltpeter from the mighty river of feculence our animals have created.

So what's a growing settlement to do? Let them rot in the sun?

No! Let's use them to make charcoal!

The new coal recipe is exactly the same, except the input is 60 sticks instead of 30 wood.

I took this 2 to 1 conversion ratio from their fuel ratio (the inverse) and the fact that they both stack to 200, so twice as much volume of sticks sounded roughly correct to me. If you can point me to some facts showing otherwise, let me know below and I'll correct it.

Known issues:
  • The "Until you have" counter always reads your stockpile as zero, even after completing a craft. This is unfortunately not currently fixable due to the direct link between a Production's id and the expected name of its output, combined with the fact we cannot modify item groups. You can read more about it on this post[discord.com] in the Going Medieval discord.

@莫名某某 Unfortunately no. Basically, when calculating total for "until you have", the game looks at the id of your Productions entry and assumes it to be equal to the name of the output item to be counted. The production id "coal" is already taken for the standard coal production, and we cannot edit that to add this functionality.

Can the problem of "Until you have" counter errors be avoided by adding a product that is similar to coal as an attribute? Of course, this might require a significant amount of work. Just a suggestion.

No problem, thanks for trying.

@Phant0m5 Unfortunately there is not a solution currently for that bug. I've added an explanation under "Known Issues" within the description above. Sorry about that - I'll keep an eye out for game improvements that might change this in the future.

Thanks @Phant0m5 for reporting this bug. Can confirm the same. Will look into fixing this weekend.

So I added this to an ongoing game and the "until you have" crafting option doesn't seem to be tracking the amount of coal I have. It is correctly making coal, but is showing 0/40 in the crafting screen and thus making coal endlessly. Meanwhile the vanilla coal recipe is showing 184/30, which is correct.

I love this idea. In Japan they have a type of charcoal called Binchotan. It's pretty expensive and made out of limbs about 3 inches or so thick so this fits perfectly. And medieval charcoal makers wouldn't have thrown away sticks, they would have gone into the kiln as well.

Great mod! As this is how historically they started making charcoal that fueled early ironworks.
The conversion rate for dry wood to coal is roughly 3:1, given the amount of sticks i'd say its pretty balanced ingame aswell.
