Polish-Austrian War of 1809 (V Coalition)
2 items
Description
The siege of Zamość lasted from 15 to 20 May 1809.
Under the provisions of the First Partition of Poland, Zamość came under Austrian rule in 1772.
However, it did not last very long. Only until 1809, when it was incorporated into the Duchy of Warsaw. The change in the city's political affiliation was a consequence of the successful Polish counter-offensive in Galicia. The entire operation was commanded by Prince Józef Poniatowski. It was part of the War of the Fifth Coalition in the Napoleonic Wars.

Map scale: 1:1. It focuses on the main direction of the Polish attack (after the capture of the Lublin Gate), i.e. the battles towards the Great city square.

Army Assault

In order to capture the Zamość fortress, he sent part of his forces to its walls. On May 15, General Ignacy Kamieński's unit arrived at the fortress. Its garrison consisted of about 3,000 soldiers under the command of an experienced Austrian officer, Colonel Ferdinand von Pulszky. Kamieński's troops were too modest to attempt to capture the fortifications. Therefore, on May 17, Prince Poniatowski sent reinforcements led by General Jean Pelletier. The French officer took command of a force of about 1,500 men. A factor working in the Poles' favor was the comprehensive assistance of the residents of Zamość. The steward Piotr Domański passed on information about the fortifications to the besiegers, and the residents of Zamość set fire to a food warehouse, while the residents of the surrounding villages spontaneously organized a unit of riflemen. In addition, many of the defenders were Polish recruits who did not engage in defense, and during the assault they actually helped the attackers.

The aforementioned assault took place on the night of May 19-20 and lasted from two to four in the morning. The main attack was directed at the Lublin Gate (which the map focuses on), which surprised the Austrian commander who expected an attack on the southern fortifications (this was the weakest side of the Zamość fortress). The Poles, fighting with great commitment, quickly pushed their opponents off the ramparts and tightened the encirclement ring around them. The last clash took place on the Great city square. The determined Vlachs distinguished themselves in it, but they had no chance of repelling the Poles. The weapons, cannons and food fell into the hands of the Poles, and about 2,500 prisoners were taken prisoner.

Strength:
Austrian Army: 3,000 soldiers.
Polish Army: 2,000 soldiers.

Casualties and losses:
Austrian Army: 3,000 soldiers (500 killed and wounded, 2500 prisoners)
Polish Army: 47 soldiers (15 killed, 32 wounded)
