Description
Historical Japanese Monarchs
Historical Japanese shoguns & emperors templates, births, & deaths

Overview
Historical Japanese Monarchs (HJM) is a mod that improves and extends the historical Japanese monarchs from the base game. Due to how PDX currently likes to implement certain historical content, Japanese rulers are often ahistorical, and often for no reason other than lack of support from PDX. For example, there are character templates defined for every emperor from Ninko to Showa (Hirohito), and any two of them can be seen in-game depending on when the Honorable Restoration is completed, but all the others won't be seen in the same game (with PDX favoring having random heirs as opposed to driving historical ones). This is a pretty low-hanging missed opportunity, and HJM aims to address that!

HJM leverages the heir-blocking features of the Heir Blocking Framework to stop ahistorical heirs from appearing while driving historical heirs for Japan. As long as the monarchy isn't abolished at any point, HJM will spawn in historical shoguns & emperors as appropriate throughout the course of a game.

On top of that, HJM has a feature for driving historical deaths of historical shoguns and emperors instead of letting them live to ahistorical ages. A game rule allows the user to select whether the deaths should be forced, encouraged (i.e. RNG-dependent), or not enforced at all (for base game old age deaths). It is recommended to play with forced deaths to allow for all of the historical monarchs to be seen!

HJM additionally adds DNA for Yoshihito (Taisho) and Hirohito to the existing templates. It also adds new templates and DNA for Emperors Akihito and Naruhito, and templates for historical shoguns from Tokugawa Iesada to Tokugawa Iemasa. That means if Japan doesn't complete the restoration by the end of the game, players will be able to see Tokugawa Yoshinobu and his descendants appear!

HJM also provides extra templates and a game rule to allow users to pick which naming scheme they would like to see for the Japanese emperors. Most other characters in Victoria 3 have their given / personal names in-game, so the base game Japanese emperors are rather unique in that they all use their posthumous names. For many people (including myself), the emperors are typically better known by their posthumous names (nobody calls it the Mutsuhito Restoration, after all), but for those who prefer improved historical accuracy and/or consistency, a game rule can be set to toggle between posthumous and given names.

Mod Compatibility
HJM REQUIRES either the Heir Blocking Framework or the Community Mod Framework for proper functionality. You do not need both. Without either of these mods, ahistorical heirs will not be blocked and it will interfere with the mod.

HJM has built-in support for Royal Splendor. Please remember to enable the Royal Splendor Compatibility game rule before starting a new campaign!

==========

HJM overwrites the following vanilla content:
  • Event meiji.1 ("The <ruler name> Restoration")
  • English localizations for Ninko, Komei, Taisho, and Showa (aesthetic change - not critical for functionality)

HJM does not touch any other vanilla files and defines everything else it needs in its own files, so all other mods should work.

Loading Order
HJM may be placed anywhere with respect to HBF/CMF.
This mod otherwise works alone and may be placed anywhere to any other mods.

DLC Requirements
This mod does not rely on any DLC features, so you should not need any DLCs.

@Quantum Ramen
I can't seem to replicate your issue 🤔 Maybe my development version of the mod is fine and the issue will go away on your end after I push an update?

@ImperialStormtrooper there's a mod that adds all of that and more, it's called Royal Splendor

seems to be a bug where the vanilla models of the emperors appear instead of the royal splendor versions, despite the game rule being enabled

私の作っているMODの「Historical Japan Remastered」及び「Improved The Meiji Restoration」にて、大正天皇と昭和天皇のDNAデータを使わせていただきました。感謝いたします。
I used the DNA data of Emperor Taisho and Emperor Showa in the MODs I am creating, "Historical Japan Remastered" and "Improved The Meiji Restoration".Thank you very much.

It's because there's no built-in way to have historical heirs (without some script-driven stuff like this mod goes out of its way to do) and they wanted to spawn all emperors in historical emperor-prince pairs (aside from Hirohito if it doesn't happen until very late in the game). This meant they had to spawn some emperors later than when they historically died, most notable being Komei since he can spawn as late as Taisho's birthday

I am wondering why PDX made the restoration event ahistorical.
Great works!

Hopefully someone else will 🙂

I have no intention to do any others. Like I stated in an earlier comment, I made this primarily as a proof of concept of my heir blocking framework mod to show what it can be useful for, so I'm hoping other mods can pick it up to drive their own historical dynasties.

I did Japan in particular because most of the characters are already in the base game, so I figured it would be easiest & most apparent country to make a mod for.

This mod is beauuuutiful! I place here my request to make one with the Hohenzollern dynasty.
