Vesikko - Finnish Coastal Submarine

Description
hi its me im back with another low effort creation to farm steam points

Vesikko, initially designated CV-707, is a Finnish coastal submarine. She was designed by the "dutch" firm IvS, a measure by the germans to keep their submarine knowledge somewhat extant despite the treaty of versailles, essentially making her the prototype for the later german Type-IIa uboats. Built at the crichton-vulcan shipyard in turku, she served throughout ww2 before being relegated as a training vessel, and subsequently decommissioned in 1946, having sunken one ship: the soviet Vyborg. Vesikko is since 1973 a well preserved museum ship.

OPERATION

i kinda did something silly and made a weird control system with this one. oopsie. to change course or depth, you simply change a target value on the handwheel associated with your given parameter, and the """crew""" of the vessel will adjust to it. Initially this was for space reasons, but i ended up growing attached to it.

left handwheel is for depth, right is for desired dive angle. Key switch activates the system and dives the boat

The most useful control parameters can be changed from the helmsmans position. Starting Engines and electric motors is done in the engine room but is fairly simple.

DIVING PROCEDURE

step 1: start filling ballast
step 2: hit the main dive key
step 3: shift to e-motors and kill the diesels
step 4: close the hatch (TURN OFF ENGINES AND COMPRESSOR FIRST)

BALLAST

pretty standard. heres a simple guide for neutral buoyancy:

Tank I
Tank II
Trim Tank
Tank III
1300
12700
1200
8600

Fuel tank has a system to keep its weight the same as the diesel drains. Expended torpedoes have to be compensated for with the torpedo trim tank located in the bow.

TORPEDOES

whoah hey torpedoes that arent just point and shoot. both shooting and reloading is a bit of a process so hang on to something.

step 1. flood the tube. keep an eye on the gauge, as well as the indicator panel. when the light is lit the tube can be opened
step 2. flooding the tube takes some time. input your desired deflection angle and running depth into the console. READ: current depth needs to be on for torpedoes to track vertically. Guidance key will reset after each firing
step 3. turn the crank till the tube door indicator lights up. now you can fire it from the switch in the conning tower
step 4. go to the conning tower, select your tube, and hit the thing

my explanation is vague but it will probably make sense when youre looking at it. the deflection angle input is MANUAL. it will not fire where the periscopes are looking. the torpedoes are also unguided by default.

to empty the tube do the steps in reverse

to reload watch the video:

CAVEATS

of course this build isnt perfect. nothing is. READ

- the attack periscope is a pain in the ass to extend and retract. its so small i cant really do much about it
- keep at least one hatch open while running the engine. And never start the compressor before the engine is running
- dont fire torpedoes at speed. common sense
- the battery life is a bit ass. it wasnt really possible to cram more than 4 large batteries in there sadly
- This creation is HEAVY. TPS can vary, sometimes its at 60 sometimes it isnt. medium physics detail is recommended, things start going haywire at low
- and for gods sake dont charge the batteries at flank for extended periods of time

acknowledgements and credit and ♥♥♥♥:

- thanks to Beefbucket for being finnish, translating, finding references, and generally causing this whole mess in the first place.
- ZE Engine Controller because come on
- this thing but heavily modified
- Benzin for demonstrating how to reload in that cool video
- subworks for putting up with my period of intense uboat autism needed for me to even think about creating this

This thing isnt fully accurate, but its basically as close as i could get without booking a boat ticket to finland to go look at the damn thing myself. some things are omitted because i enjoy wanting to live. Very glad to get this thing out of my system, either i finish it or it finishes me. now if yuo will excuse me i will sleep for ten thousand years.

and dont take this or things from this for yourself without permission. ill know it if you do

thank you

even if you dont, i still absolutely LOVE your submarine builds

i would, but im not too fond of messing with technical things, mostly just designing and creating the functions

sounds like a cool project, but not one im interested in. Why not have a go yourself?

i know, but maybe you could put a light auto cannon and make it more semi-submersible and less of a submarine?
Nova  [author] 24 Aug @ 2:38am
this is basically a torpedo boat

try making a torpedo boat? could be somewhere to start
Nova  [author] 23 Aug @ 9:03pm
big task. not even i know what i will build next

can you start making warships from the same era that this is from? i love the interiors and functions
