Die.
You will walk through [REDACTED] as normal, and meet [REDACTED] (who I will now refer to as "Guide")

You are sent back to the factory.
Die again.
The area you spawn in should be a bit more furnished, along with some other differences.

There is still no space for you in [REDACTED].

Your Guide says they are going to "train" you, and has you agree or disagree with some statements.

You are sent back to the factory.
Die a third time.
Your Guide has brought you to the Luminescent Caverns! Jump off of the platform you spawn on and explore for a bit.

Once you're done exploring, head towards the walkway in the corner. It will bring you to a museum about the Luminescent Caverns.

Exit the museum once you're done looking around, and follow the walkway.

Enter and walk through the cave, despite it being closed.

Climb your way up the structural beams, then continue down the walkway.

Enter the portal in front of you, and

You are sent back to the factory.
Die a fourth time.
You're somewhere different, again!

Make your way through the hallways.

The receptionist will greet you, but your Guide won't be here for "over twenty minutes"! Yes, you will have to wait.

While you wait, you can explore the area.

Next to the chair near the exit of the hallway, there is a false wall, where you can meet some computers.

Past the green door is a storage room with a breaker that seemingly does nothing.

The yellow door is locked, but will be unlocked once you wait long enough.

Past the blue door is a hallway leading to a 1:16 model of Rosepark hills, where you can meet one of your Guide's researchers. They talk about a longing to become another creature; to feel the senses and needs of one.

Back in the hallway, behind a wall panel you can find two computers snuggling. :3

Once you've waited long enough, the light above the yellow door will glow green, meaning that it has unlocked. Inside, you will find another door, leading to a conversation with your Guide, where you learn that they've been waiting two centuries for your return. :(

Past another hallway, you find a small area with some trees and ponds, revealing [REDACTED]'s colorful stars!

In the corner is another doorway, leading to some more dialogue, and some parkour.

You are sent back to the factory, but time will be slower!
Die a fifth time.
You are greeted with a photo of the Dithered Ruins. To your left and right are more photos, and behind you is your Guide, who explains that the Dithered Ruins were where you were meant to visit this time, but they were fully booked.

Your Guide walks with you (despite them not actually being there) while you make your way up to an island. Be careful, if you fall, you'll be stuck in a room for 78 years. :(

Just kidding. Larry will let you out early.

You make it to the top of the fountain, and

You are sent back to the factory.
Die a sixth time.
You are greeted by a wall of text welcoming you (back) to [REDACTED].
Behind you is your Guide, who has, yet again, been waiting thousands of years for your return. :(

After some walking, you are sent to the Grievances Cemetery. This area is large, and every one of the orbs (? I'm not sure what to call them) has some text to be read.

Explore for a while.

Once you're done, head through the portal in the middle of the Cemetery.

Head to your left, and interact with the blue computer. A door in the lobby of this area will have opened, head through it.

Circle around the area you are dropped into, and head through the doorway that opens up.

Circle around the area you are dropped into, then head back to where you came in.

Use the floating steps to make a staircase up, then follow the ramp.

Follow the reminders on the ground, then walk through the portal.

There are four switches hidden in the cubicles.

Once you've flipped one of them, head through the door.

Follow the blocks(?) on the cave floor and head through the portal.

After you've gone through the many doors, and after some dialogue from your Guide,

You are sent back to the factory, at ~3x speed, one final time.
Die one final time.
You are now Home. :)

If you'd like to leave, there is a portal at the opposite end of the structure you spawn in.

Does the changelevel command have the same problem? I know in most Source games using map doesn't preserve game state, but changelevel does, though I'm not well versed in Portal 2's version of the engine.

I posted this explanation in a separate thread about this same bug:

This is due to the "map ..." command, which is used to dynamically load the required map, acting unpredictably. It seems to work when the save has been created in the current gameplay session, but then when running the "map ..." command after loading an existing save an error is returned in the console, shutting down the server. In the next update (not for a few weeks at least), I will look into building a solution based entirely on map entities, which should fix the problem.

For now, there is a very quick way to die in the game, which can be found by taking the left bridge in the tutorial level. I don't want to spoil too much more for new players, but this should help to access end-game levels without this problem.

Little update from some guy! did some testing. I could never get afterlife progess to remain between saves, even if loading in from main menu, so if you want to go home, do not ever load a save (as of 5/23/2025)! you have to do it all in one shot.

Fastest way to die that I found worked 100% of the time was starting the game, completing the intro section, then falling in-between the first "bridges" choice, waiting the ten seconds, then walking the way to the pit. that always progressed afterlife progress, but only IF you do it all "in one go" and never load a save.

if you're reading this guide, you are most likely looking to "go home" anyways and you dont need me to convince you. but if not, its worth it! the developer put every fiber of their being into these sections.

I had to keep loading the ending06 map with the changelevel command, ending01 did not consistently trigger the "Die trigger" and I did not want to replay the entire game. On ending04 the transit door did not close, I think once you beat that you can't die that way, so could not use that one. Loding the ending06 map and jumping off 30 times + blue plate seemed to trigger it every time.

I sent you a friend request, since you don't seem to have any contacts listed anywhere

You should be able to load a save, as this keeps your "death progress" (which map gets loaded next upon death). You can also take the quick route and knock it out fairly quickly if your saves do not work.

If you think that you have lost your progress and you are an advanced user, you can always open the developer console and enter the command "dump_globals". If you see "deathprogress_bit1" "2" and "3", then your progress is still present in your save file. If you do the following and do not see this, please report this to me so that I can fix it.

I appreciate everyone progressing despite difficulties, and I hope that you all have enjoyed or will enjoy going Home.

P.S.: I love the summary of each map here. :D It's really fun to see other people make sense of the Land of [REDACTED].

i think that would be the fastest

iirc just jumping down the middle, and not walking on one of the bridges, makes you wait for only 10 seconds
Zepy 10 Jan @ 1:59pm
So what is the quickest way to die from the start? maybe the left bridge when it tells you to go right?
nil  [author] 10 Jan @ 1:58pm
You can't load a save, from what I've seen
