Wurrow, the Cavernous

Play as Wurrow, the Cavernous, a Depth Worm ever so slightly more sentient than the rest, but with the same set of teeth. A self-sufficient survivor, capable of escaping dire situations and dealing large amounts of damage from relative safety, albiet slowly.

Wormy — At Home in the Dark
Wurrow is a Depth Worm, and by nature, accustomed to the dark and the caves. He is considered a monster so Pigmen, Bunnymen and Catcoons will be hostile. He doesn't have sanity drain while in the caves nor from darkness, but the natural light of the sun causes Wurrow to lose 7.5 Sanity/minute during daytime. He also doesn't lose Sanity when using a wormhole to teleport, or while near Depth Worms and Greater Depth Worms.

Wurrow’s sharp dentures and insatiable palate enable him to stomach almost any food, even monster food. However, he is unable to consume goodies and generics (honey, royal jelly, glommers gloop) as they get stuck in his many teeth.
  • With a stomach made of worminess iron, he can eat monster foods as well as raw meats.
  • He will not suffer the negative effects of Lesser Glow Berries, Glow Berries, and Lichen.
  • His favorite food is Unagi; he gains an additional 15 Hunger from eating them.
Wurrow’s lure provides light based on what stage of growth its in. In 2 days it grows into a budding Glow Berry flower. After 2 more days, it flowers into a Glow Berry, providing a small light radius. After an additional 2 days, it wilts, producing no light. (In the future, the lure will not be tied to the beard mechanic, and will have a function outside of providing light)

Excavator — Cravings for Caving
By right clicking on the ground, Wurrow will burrow into it at a cost of 2.5 Hunger. In this state, he is able to drop aggro, move around and perform a host of limited actions. Burrowing increases Wurrow's hunger by 2x as long as he is actively in the ground, increased to 4x while moving. Once his hunger reaches 0 , he will be forced out of the ground.
While burrowed Wurrow has several disadvantages:
  • Has decreased vision but the ability to sense his environment,
  • Unable to equip hand slot items
  • Cannot perform certain actions (eating, crafting, etc.)
As well as several advantages:
  • Movement speed is a base of 6.6 (110%), increased to 7.2 (120%) while he is in the caves
  • Can till farm soil while moving; his base movement speed is set to 4 (66%)
  • Unlocks the ability to dig up stumps and items like saplings and grass tufts
By performing an attack click or press, Wurrow will resurface, biting for 81.6 damage and returning to the ground. This bite attack has a reduced animation speed compared to normal attacking to compensate for it's high damage. Wurrow's temperature cannot go below or above 60° while he is burrowed and he will not gain any wetness while burrowed.

Acidic — This Rain Tickles!
Once Shadow Rifts are enabled, Acid Rain will empower Wurrow. Whenever the caves begin to rain acid, Wurrow will receive a 50% damage boost and a 25% speed boost. In turn, he will also receive 25% more damage from all sources. Wurrow is immune to the damaging effect of Acid Rain, but his inventory and gear will still be impacted.

Coming in later updates:

horrible idea i came up with for the worm part of the skill tree
you can make an item that is really expensive, but literally just has a greater worm pop up and munch on that enemy, like monstro's tooth from the binding of isaac.
the worm then dissapears after the enemy has been chewed up and spat out.

That's the neat part... You don't! Wurrow is specifically designed NOT as a summoner; he's passive to Depth Worms and the Greater Depth Worm, but he does not tame them.

In his skill tree (which is being developed) he will have more to do with Depth Worms, but that's not coming out quite yet.

Currently Wurrow IS considered wet, and does not lose sanity from being wet, however in order to not take away too much from Wormwood or Wurt, I did not give him the temperature immunity to wetness nor the immunity to slippery items. He is immune to temperature while burrowed, but that's there for different reasons.

I know this is probably for the sake of gameplay balancing, but, as depth worms are always wet, wouldn't that go well with the characters kit? I think no negative effects from wetness, like Wurt and Wormwood have, would be more appropriate than immunity to it while borrowed.

Yes this issue has been documented, and I'm shipping a patch tonight that solves this issue (in the way it was intended)

Wurrow dealt like 416 damage with a tentacle spike and still remained underground, the merms didnt even see what hit them man.

These are documented issues, thanks for the report regardless! Once I get it working, Wurrow shouldn't be able to equip any items while burrowed, so his damage multiplier won't scale ridiculously nor will his animation be circumvented. What it's basically doing is the slower attack animation gets overridden while holding an item; thus retaining the 8.16 damage multiplier while having the normal attack speed.

I'm working on a fix now and it should be out soon.

I noticed that Wurrow behaves very strangely with a gun in his hand. Being in the ground when attacking, he jumps out, does a lot of damage and hides. That is, this character makes strong attacks, but rarely. Okay But if he has a weapon in his hands, such as an ordinary axe or spear, then he will not get out of the ground at all when attacking, which allows Wurrow to attack 2 times per second with a huge damage modifier without leaving invulnerability for a moment. This way, you can kill all creatures very quickly with ordinary tools without fear of taking damage, because the animation of jumping out and jumping just disappears when there is something in your hand. As long as there is this flaw, the character will remain unplayable, although I really like the idea.
