In HL2, 3rd person view can only be obtained via the console, and the character itself is not animated, there is no point in changing this because it will not work as well.

can you possible do the same with Gordon freeman i know he is not visable but still the arms are visible it just that i enjoyed playing as roxy in left 4 dead i wanted the same in half life 2
