Description
The 22000 Series (22000系) is a limited express EMU operated by Kintetsu Railway since 1992.

A VVVF controlled vehicle built for standard limited express services, the 22000 series is the successor to the 10400 and 11400 series in operation since the 1960s. The “ACE Car” nickname was retained and given to other types within the same rolling stock pool. After the introduction of the newer 26000 series, it became common for that type to be referred to as “Ace” (in one word), and the 22000 series as “A-C-E” (each letter read individually). The exterior of the vehicle has a rounded design, and a through type front door is installed with a cover. It was painted with a darker orange and black livery when introduced, but this was updated to the current color scheme with body renewal. This type is the first Kintetsu train to adopt three-phase squirrel cage induction motors, with four installed on every car. The all-powered configuration allows for 130km/h to be reached on the 2.28% gradient on the Shin-Aoyama Tunnel. After body renewal carried out from 2015-2020, the capacity of a 4-car set was reduced by 28 as extra luggage storage was installed. 86 cars were manufactured in total, divided into 13 x 2-car sets and 15 x 4-car sets. Per latest data, the type operates across Kintetsu’s standard gauge network, it can be coupled with other standard type limited express trains, with formations up to 10 cars in length. The entire fleet is in active service and there are no current plans for withdrawal.
