Hypothermia Kills: Definitive Edition (B41)

Description
WHEN ARE YOU UPDATING FOR B42???

End of January 2025. The changes in B42 have most likely broken something, but the fixes will also likely to be fairly straightforward.

JAN 2025 UPDATE:

Currently updates are on hold. I was not anticipating the update schedule of B42 (the regular updates are great, but they make things difficult for maintaining mods, at least for the time being).

In addition to some other changes/a busy schedule, I am conducting a Project Zomboid B41 campaign with some friends, which has been a work in progress for nearly two years - so that takes priority/my remaining free time. Once TIS sets an approximate date for when B42's multiplayer will be available, I will work on updating my mods for B42. If I find time, the update will come, however for now I suggest just sticking with B41 if you want multiplayer or to play with these mods. Otherwise, check out B42 iand explore the new features and content TIS has been adding - personally I think there's plenty there to keep people busy without too many mods. B42 also added quite a few features that I'd like to incorporate in both existing and new mods I have planned, so when I get back into the swing of modding, some more exciting things will be coming down the line.

Thanks for all your interest! I'm not disappearing from Zomboid, don't worry.

A new B42 version will be uploaded to the workshop so B41 players can still use this one.

Overview

Based on spoon's "Hypothermia Kills" mod , this mod adds a more realistic hypothermia damage system and can be fully customized in the sandbox settings.

In the base game, hypothermia damage is completely unrealistic, and I found that the original "Hypothermia Kills" did not do enough. You could spend an entire day with a core temperature of 20°C without dying.

Here, damage from hypothermia can occur once a player's core temperature drops below 30°C, and the damage scales based on how low the player's core temperature is.

All damage is done IN ADDITION to the base game's hypothermia system.
This mod DOES NOT change the probability of your character catching a cold.

Default settings
Every 10 in-game minutes, players have a 60% chance of sustaining damage if their body temperature is below a certain threshold (default: 30°C).

This damage scales linearly based on how far below their body temperature is from this threshold.

Thus, at 29°C body temperature, player will take 1 damage; at 25°C they will take 5 damage; at 20°C (minimum allowed by the game) they will take 10 damage.

Customization options
Hypothermia Temperature Threshold: The body temperature below which the player can start taking damage

Damage Probability: Percent chance that a player with a body temperature below the hypothermia temperature threshold will take damage every 10 in-game minutes.

Damage Scaling: Constant or Linear
Constant damage scaling means that damage remains the same, regardless of how cold you are.

Constant Damage: How much damage a character sustains when Constant Damage Scaling is selected.

Linear Damage Baseline Temperature: Used when the default Linear Damage Scaling is selected.
Damage Received = Baseline Temperature - Current Body Temperature.

Compatibility and Installation
Can be added and removed to existing saves.

Works in both Singleplayer/SP and Multiplayer/MP

Does not overwrite any game files, so should be compatible with all mods EXCEPT the original "Hypothermia Kills" mod

I'm adding this to a list of mods I plan on porting over to B42. No guarantee it'll work, but we'll see.

Regarding the update to B42, they definitely broke the hypothermia moodle in the current unstable build, it no longer damages the player.

Yes. Updates are planned for January once I've had time to familiarize myself with all the changes made to B42's APIs.

I will upload a new B42 version and leave this one unchanged for B41/MP folks.

u updating this to B42?

@Spenglerian, thank you for all that. I'm looking forward to your mod.

This mod works with cryogenic winter, although you'll probably want to lower the damage threshold so you don't start taking damage until your character is already quite cold.

Cryogenic winter modifies the minimum and maximum temperatures to make every day insanely cold - it doesn't change how the base game treats hypothermia (which will cause your hp to slowly decrease to 1, but will never kill you). This mod simply adds damage to your character based on how low their body temperature is.

KYR Real Weather is another alternative to Cryogenic Winter - you can tweak minimum and maximum temperatures to your liking in order to get a challenge that still feels fairly realistic.

Are there any suggestions on using this with (or without) cryogenic winter? What I mean is, does this work with that one, or do I even need this one too if I want the cold to be realistically lethal?

Heat Stroke Kills DE is finished but Advanced Thermoregulation &Thirst requires a bit more time and testing, so I won't update the mod just yet. I'd rather push the updates in one go.

I will note that I am planning an update to this mod by the end of this coming weekend (roughly by November 3), partially based on @tonyzur’s feedback.

The idea is to rename this mod and have it include a total of 3 submods: Hypothermia Kills DE (current version), “Heat Stroke Kills: Definitive Edition” and “Advanced Thermoregulation and Thirst”

Heat Stroke Kills will add a very similar system as Hypothermia Kills, except for hyerthermia/heat stroke.

Advanced Thermoregulation and Thirst will improve the realism of how weather, sunshine, character weight, alcohol consumption, and various other factors influence body temperature and thirst gain (I don’t understand why your character can get completely TRASHED on bourbon and it doesn’t dehydrate you)

Everything will be customizable in the sandbox settings and modular (so you don’t even have to load the other submods if you don’t want them).

It will also, of course, be save-game safe.
