Soviet Endgame: Battle of the Sea of Japan

Description
25 July 1981
VA-27 “Royal Maces”
USS Coral Sea
Sea of Japan

“Gentlemen,” said Commander Gerard “Chops” Armstrong, “since we left Sasebo, we’ve known that Ivan might decide to make a run at us. It looks like that’s exactly what’s happening. Intel reports that P-3s out of Misawa have picked up the Soviet Pacific Fleet south of Vladivostok. Our best evidence indicates that the fleet is heading to intercept us before we can land in Korea.” He looked across the room and made eye contact with Lieutenant Hayes. “Scooter, what can you tell us about the Soviet Pacific Fleet?” Every aviator in the room had a keen understanding of what the Soviets had, but Pharoah knew Scooter was obsessed with the order of battle.
“Yes, sir,” said Scooter. “The Pacific Fleet is the second-largest in the Soviet Navy, second only to the Northern Fleet.”
“Especially after that ass-whipping we handed to the Black Sea Fleet,” said Heaver, getting a good laugh from the squad.
“Well, yes… sort of,” continued Scooter. “The Pacific Fleet is not only larger but more capable. For starters, they have a significant standoff attack capability. We will not be able to get close without putting ourselves in range of their surface-to-surface missiles. Worse news for us is that they have a significant surface-to-air missile capability.” The room got quiet. “If we’re tasked with making an air strike against the fleet, we’re most certainly going in harm’s way.”
“All right,” said Chops, “on that pleasant note, the boss is sitting in with command staff and finding out what our assignment will be. Smoke ’em if ya got ’em, boys. That’s all we have for now.” The men knew that they wouldn’t have to wait long, but with so much at stake, the waiting was torture.

In this scenario, straight from the Pages of the "Soviet Endgame" series, the Americans are preparing a massive amphibious assault on North Korea. Seeing an opportunity to take American carriers off the board, the Soviet make a bold attack, running right at the Americans. Can the Americans engage and destroy the fleet before the Carriers and Gators are in danger? Find out today!
