Description
The 3200 Series is a commuter/subway train operated by Kintetsu Railway since 1986.

Following the production of 1420 series prototype cars in 1984, Kintetsu would introduce a new generation of commuter trains, starting with the mass produced 3200 series. This type was intended for the Nara-Kyoto Line system and are also compatible with the Karasuma Line of Kyoto Municipal Subway. The car body is constructed with lightweight aluminum alloy, which was fully adopted after the successful long-term results of the 8000 series experimental vehicle. Empty weight per car was reduced by approximately 4 tonnes compared to previous generation types. Initial vehicles were produced in 4 car sets, but they were quickly extended to 6 cars as it became the new standard for the Karasuma Line. 7 train sets were manufactured, totaling 42 cars. The 3200 series are operated in fixed sets and are not coupled to other types, unlike the majority of Kintetsu’s commuter fleet. Since the introduction of the 3220 series, there exists an excess of subway-capable vehicles, therefore the 3200 series are also utilized on above-ground only runs. It is not equipped with safety devices compactible with the Hanshin Line, and thus does not operate past Osaka-Namba Station.
