Description
ASL TAC10 Get Up Kids!
On 16 September 1944, shortly after Gerd von Rundstedt's return to the Western Front, and after a conference held at the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, Hitler instructed a small staff under the control of General Jodl to prepare an offensive in the Ardennes. This operation was called "Wacht am Rhein".
The preparation of the operation was shrouded in secrecy, aided by draconian measures to preserve it. Field Marshals von Rundstedt and Model were informed on 24 October. Among the leaders of the Reich, Albert Speer was one of the few to be kept informed of the preparation and implementation of this offensive.
Model commanded Army Group B, which would be responsible for the attack
On Saturday, December 16, 1944, at 5:30 a.m., a major artillery preparation was launched. At 6 a.m., German combat patrols infiltrated between the American strongpoints in order to seize a few essential passages. At 8 a.m., covered by fog, the real German offensive began.
It was, however, Hitler's last Blietzkrieg before the twilight of the Nazi eagle.
