Description
The HOT3500 Series (HOT3500形) is a single car DMU operated by Chizu Express.

Manufactured for local trains on the Chizu Express line, 10 cars of the HOT3500 series were built in 1994. Constructed primarily from ordinary steel, it is small railcar at 17 meters long and 2.7 meters wide. The acronym “HOT” stands for Hyogo, Okayama and Tottori, the three prefectures that the Chizu Express line runs through. Equipped with the same engine model as the HOT7000 limited express trains, the “3500” number approximates the engine output per car, which is halved as only engine is installed as opposed to two. The side panels and roof are made of thin weather resistant steel to reduce the weight of the vehicle, raising performance sufficiently to reach the intended maximum speed of 110km/h. The interior of the vehicles has semi-cross seating, in a 2+2 configuration of non-rotating seats in bays of 4, long seats are located at the end of the car. There is a single wheelchair space provided per car, but the Japanese-style toilets are not accessible. One car (3521) serves as a group travel/tour train, it has improved passenger amenities and can be equipped with karaoke equipment and a “tunnel theatre”, which projects both inside and outside the train when travelling through the numerous tunnels on the line. The HOT3500 series also runs onto the JR Inbi Line between Chizu Station and Tottori Station, it therefore shares the same automated announcement system as JR trains in the area. As the local population in the area is quite low, the type mostly operates as single car, with 2 cars in peak hours.
