The Naval Special Forces

Naval Special Forces are the "black ops" operators in the Republic Navy, the NSF partake in activities such as: taking down spice rings, raiding buildings, dropping high value targets & working alongside Special Operations and Security Forces. During large scale operations, they may perform direct action and deep reconnaissance where necessary.

During the early Clone Wars period, with the arrival of clone troopers, sections within the Republic Intelligence believed utilising such assets would be extremely beneficial for expanding their own operations and increasing the security of the Galactic Republic. From this concept, several different Special Operations units were founded to fulfil separate purposes and meet the agenda of their High Command elements/handlers.

Clones within these units would be recruited from decimated formations that suffered extreme casualties during the First Battle of Geonosis, requiring their dissolution and redistribution of assets that were assigned to such units that are now inoperable.

For what was initially dubbed “Project Zulu”, survivors from the Battle of Geonosis were hand picked and inducted into the Naval Marines, and pushed through a rapid training program under an external advisor in order to develop their skills in the shortest time possible. The primary function of the Zulu Squad is to conduct clandestine operations utilising Republic Navy assets and specialised equipment curated by Republic Intelligence operatives and military engineers working for various corporations aligned with the Galactic Republic (BlasTech Industries, Merr-Sonn Munitions, Inc. Ect).

This would see the creation of “Naval Special Forces” (NSF). Such troopers would see an early roll out into varying specialist roles, including manning the IPV-2 Stealth Corvette, and acting as stealth infiltrator if none others were available. They would receive advanced armour that could detect subtle vibrations, and could be retrofitted to detect communication systems if connected to a radio pack.

With the initial success of this program, the new dubbed “stealth ops clones”; or “spec ops troopers”, were assigned in squadrons to the varying fleets of the Republic, and issued out according to the needs of the battlefield. The training scheme became more regimented and standardised, with most of the recruits being pulled from Clone Marines, Engineers, and sometimes Pilots. They would be trained to complete a variety of objectives and tasks, primarily focusing on operations within specialised vessels and boarding action.

Typically, such a force would supplement on-going operations being conducted by Clone Marines. However, they would see most of their action during clandestine operations under the purview of the residing Admiral, and collaborating with local law enforcement in counter space-based criminal activity; namely smuggling. From this, NSF operators became adept and specialised at enhanced interrogation techniques, a lot of which were picked up from local agencies.

With the development of BX Commandos, and the employment of mercenaries to eliminate Republic officials and officers, NSF had to pivot towards a more security based role protecting VIPs and performing counter assassin operations when other security personnel were not available. Per doctrine, special warfare teams could contain up to 8 personnel; though were usually smaller due to manning issues and casualties sustained during operations.
