Description
The HOT7000 Series (HOT7000系) is a limited express type DMU operated by Chizu Express since 1994.

Operating as Super Hakuto between the Kansai Region and Tottori Prefecture, the HOT7000 series is a high-performance diesel car equipped with a pendulum-type tilting device. It’s entry into service on the newly opened Chizu Line shortened travel times between Tottori and Osaka to 2 hours and 30 minutes, much faster than the previous route via the Fuku-chiyama Line and San’in Main Line. The name of the type comes from the initials of the three prefectures along the line (Hyogo, Okayama, and Tottori), and the number from the 710PS engine output per car approximated to 700. Similar to other limited express trains in the region, there is a non-walkthrough type leading car and a walk-through type leading car. The former has a large wide view front window, and it’s round streamlined shape aims to give a sense of speed. Each car is equipped with two engines of the same type found on Chizu Express’ local trains, lowering the cost of maintenance. The interior of all cars were refreshed in 2009 with a gray color scheme, ensuring a high quality of service despite the type’s relative old age. 34 cars were produced in total, with 10 non-walkthrough type leading cars and 3 walkthrough ones. Unlike other types with this arrangement, the walkthrough leading cars are not placed facing one another in the middle of the formation, but typically at one end or connected to a middle car on both sides. As is the standard for limited express type DMUs, there are no fixed formations and cars can be arranged freely. Super Hakuto typically operates as a 5-car formation, increasing to 6 during busier periods.
