Description
The 3700 Series (3700形) is a commuter train operated by Keisei Electric Railway.

This type was introduced in 1991 for the opening of the second stage of Hokuso Railway, which is a 160km/h capable line planned to eventually connect directly to Narita Airport. The 3700 series was the first new Keisei train to adopt VVVF control and first to drop car designations such as “KuHa” and “MoHa”, instead giving each car just a vehicle number. It is also compatible with through operating on the Toei Asakusa Line and Keikyu lines. Built over a period of 11 years, the 3700 series went through several production batches with minor differences in exterior design and equipment, the main specifications remained identical. A total of 132 cars were manufactured, in 15 8-car formations and 2 6-car formations. In addition, another 2 8-car trains were produced for Keisei’s subsidiary Hokuso Railway and entered service as the 7300 series, but it is essentially identical. With the Narita Sky Access Line’s opening in 2010, all 8-car trains had their braking capabilities strengthened to raise their maximum operating speed to 120km/h. The fleet also had their interiors renewed from 2012 to 2018, and some older vehicles had their exteriors modified as well. As of current, there are 124 cars in service, including 32 leased to Hokuso Railway and Chiba New Town Railway. Operationally, the 8-car trains run direct services to Asakusa Line and Keikyu lines, with occasional use on Access Express between Narita and Haneda airports. 6-car sets mainly operate local services on the Main Line, Chiba Line, and Chihara Line, but are also sometimes seen on Asakusa Line services that do not continue onto Keikyu lines.
