Tobu 20000 Series / 東武20000系

The 20000 Series (20000系) is a commuter/subway EMU operated by Tobu Railway since 1988.

Manufactured for through service between the Tobu Isesaki Line and Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, the 20000 series has 18-meter-long cars and 3 doors per side, like the previous 2000 series. Shorter vehicles were used on the Hibiya Line due to concerns over sharp curves, and the type has a high performance 6M2T configuration with all middle cars being powered. The front of the leading cars is similar to Tokyo Metro vehicles introduced at around the same time, with the emergency door located to the side and an enlarged cab space. 24 sets of 8 cars each were produced from 1988 to 1997, these are divided into the 20000, 20050, and 20070 series, which have minor differences in equipment but near identical specifications. Starting from 2017, the 70000 series began replacing the 20000 series on through services, as vehicles on the Hibiya Line were unified to 20 meters and 4 doors. 22 sets were converted to 4 cars after their withdrawal from the Hibiya Line and were renumbered as the 20400 series. They were made to be compatible with one-man operations and began service on the Nikko Line, Utsunomiya Line, and Kinugawa Line in 2018. 8 surplus middle cars were transferred to Alpico Kotsu (formerly Matsumoto Electric Railway) and remodeled into the 20100 series; the rest were scrapped. As of current, there are 88 cars in service with Tobu, and they are unlikely to be replaced for the foreseeable future.
