Description
The 3600 Series (3600形) is a commuter train of Keisei Electric Railway.

Developed as a general type vehicle for the Keisei network, the 3600 series entered service in 1982 as the successor model of the earlier 3500 series. It was designed to reduce energy expenditure, simplify maintenance, and improve safety. The exterior design is basically the same as the 3500 series but uses full stainless-steel construction instead of a mix of stainless and regular steel. The shape of the leading cars was changed slightly, while destination displays were moved onto the connecting doors. Keisei’s financial situation was difficult during that time, and only one 6-car set was produced every two years until the pace picked up in 1987. The total number of cars produced was 54 in 9 sets. Increasing demand on the Asakusa Line express through trains led to the type being converted to 8 cars in 1997, four excess leading cars were installed with a VVVF control system and motors and arranged into a new 6 car formation. The 3500 series ran primarily rapid or express trains on the Keisei Main Line and through services on the Asakusa Line. However, it didn’t meet the technical regulations of Keikyu Lines, which dictated that leading cars should not be unpowered, therefore it did not operate onto them. As the type was used on many of Keisei’s primary lines, the company decided to replace them with new rolling stock instead of carrying out renovation works. Accordingly, cars in the series began to be scrapped starting in 2017, as the 3100 series was introduced. A few 8 car sets were shortened to 6 cars, the 6 car VVVF formation became 4 cars, while others were withdrawn outright. Currently, only a single 6 car set and the 4-car VVVF train remain. The former served as a spare train from 2021-2023, but recently have been put back into active service to replace a 3700 series set lost in an accident, while the latter runs on the Kanamachi, Chiba, and Chihara lines. Both sets are likely to be withdrawn in the next few years.
