Description
The 70000 Series (70000系) is a commuter EMU operated by Tobu Railway since 2017.

Developed for through running operations on the Hibiya Line, the 70000 series was introduced in a joint effort with Tokyo Metro to standardize vehicles on the line. The previous fleet was composed of a mixture of 3 doors and some 5 doors’ trains, and both Tobu and Tokyu operated special 18 meters per car types for the route due to concerns over sharp curves. This situation prevented the installation of platform doors on the Hibiya Line, and caused confusion for passengers as the markers for the position of train doors were not always correct. As such, the 70000 series was produced at the same time as the similar Tokyo Metro 13000 series to consolidate vehicles to 20-meter cars with 4 doors per side, in 7 car formations. While Tokyu switched through running from the Toyoko Line to the Fuku-toshin Line, and thus no longer operated any vehicles on the Hibiya Line. The 70000 series is equipped with a single-axel steering bogie designed by Tokyo Metro, this arrangement meant only 2 motors would be installed per car instead of the usual 4, and as such, every vehicle in the formation would be classified as a motor car but the M:T ratio remained at 1:1. In 2019, Tobu announced that a reserve seating trains would be introduced on the Hibiya Line – Isesaki Line through services, operated by the new 70090 series. This type is equipped with rotatable seats that could be converted between cross seating mode and long seating mode, like the 50090 series on the Tojo Line. Known as the TH Liner, these services operate local between Ebisu Station and Kasumigaseki Station, where no additional fee is required, and standing is allowed. Beyond Kasumigaseki, only those with a reserved ticket can travel, but it is possible to purchase one on board. 18 trains were produced in the 70000 series and 6 in the 70090 series, for a total of 168 cars. It is currently the only Tobu type to enter the Hibiya Line.
