Description
The 9000 Series (9000系) is a commuter/subway vehicle operated by Tobu Railway since 1981.

Manufactured in preparation of through operations between the Tobu Tojo Line and Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line, the 9000 series was constructed to be compatible with subway specifications. It was Tobu's first 10-car fixed formation, and incorporated a number of technologies considered new at the time. A single prototype set was produced in 1981 and entered commercial service on above-ground lines, 6 years before the scheduled start of through operations. This was to allow drivers and other staff to practice operating under subway regulations to ensure smooth operation in the future. 6 mass produced sets entered service in 1987, and another two sets were added in 1994 with the opening of the Yurakucho New Line (Now Fuku-toshin Line). These later units are known as the 9050 series and have some differences in equipment, the control system was changed from chopper control to VVVF, and the motors installed are more efficient models found on the 20000 series, although the rated output remains the same. As a result of the improved energy efficiency, the rooftop ventilators used to cool the motors became unnecessary and thus was not installed on the 9050 series. The total number of cars produced was 100 in 10 trains, the prototype car was scrapped in 2023 but all other sets remain in active service today. The fleet operates both above-ground only and through services on the Tojo Line, which continue onto the Yurakucho and Fuku-toshin lines, services on the latter also connects to the Tokyu Toyoko Line and Minatomirai Line. It operates all service levels with the exception of TJ Liner and Kawagoe Limited Express. The prototype car was never operated on subway lines as it had a different door layout to the mass produced cars, and thus was not compatible with automated platform gates.
