Description
The 817 Series (JR九州817系) is a commuter EMU operated by JR Kyushu since 2001.

Introduced with the electrification of the Sasaguri Line and parts of the Chikuho Main Line, the 817 series is the most numerous type in JR Kyushu’s commuter fleet. The basic design is a continuation of the 815 series and has the double skinned aluminum structure from Hitachi’s A-train platform. Manufactured over a period of 14 years, the 817 series has several subvariants. The 0,1000, and 1100 series have convertible cross seats, while later variants are equipped with long seats to ease congestion. All variants are 2-car sets except the 3000 series, which are 3-car sets. JR Kyushu is currently remodeling a large part of it’s older commuter fleet, in which the cross seats are replaced with long seats. The 817 series are also undergoing conversion, modified vehicles have their original number + 500 as the new vehicle number, thus becoming the 500, 1500, and 1600 series. There are a total of 145 cars in service, which is divided into 56 2-car sets and 11 3-car sets. The type is spread out across the electrified lines of Kyushu, with a presence in Nogata, Minami-Fukuoka, Sasebo, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima vehicle centers. It is operated on across the entire length of the Kagoshima Main Line, most of the Nippo Main Line, as well as other electrified suburban lines around the Fukuoka-Kitakyushu Metropolitan Area.
