Description
The KiHa 125 Series (キハ125形) is a single car DMU operated by JR Kyushu since 1993.

Manufactured for regional lines with low passenger volume, the KiHa 125 series is a NDC vehicle manufactured by Niigata Iron Works. It replaced the aging JNR KiHa 45's and KiHa 52's, which were built in the 50s and 60s. The body is 18.5 meters long with cabs on both ends, and the driver's cabin does not have an exterior door. There is a connecting door at the front of both ends, which allows for one-man operation when multiple cars are coupled together. The braking system is same type as those found on the KiHa 40 series, thus enabling joint operations with conventional diesel cars with JNR specifications. A total of 25 cars were manufactured, assigned to the Oita and Karatsu depots. The vehicles based in Oita are operated on the Kyudai and Hohi main lines, and formerly ran on the unelectrified portion of the Chikuho Main Line, and the Hitahikosan Line. From Karatsu, a smaller fleet of vehicles are placed on a number of rural lines in Saga Prefecture. As of current, all cars are in active service in formations of 1-3 cars, in addition to forming 3-car trains by coupling to the 2-car KiHa 47 series.
