Description
The 30000 Series (30000系) is a commuter type EMU operated by Tobu Railway since 1997.

Produced ahead of the start of through services to Tokyo Metro's Hanzomon Line, the 30000 series was developed as an evolution of the 10000 series. There were plans for existing 10000 series to be used on the subway, but Tobu considered the cost of modifying them too high. The 30000 series entered service 2 years before the planned initiation of through running in order to give drivers sufficient time to become accustomed to the single handle style driving controls, as this was the first Tobu vehicle to adopt them. 150 cars were manufactured in 15 sets of 4 car and an equal number of 6-car sets. At the start of their service history, the 4-car sets would often be coupled to a 2-car set of the 10000 series, and operated with the 6-car sets on the Isesaki Line. Through service to the Hanzomon Line and Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line did not commence until 2003, 4 years behind schedule. The type would be coupled to form 10-car sets, which was the length of trains on the Hanzomon Line. As a result of Tobu having a lesser number of vehicles for through services (15 compared to Tokyo Metro's 25 and Tokyu's 31), the 30000 series were mainly allocated services from the Den-en-Toshi Line that terminated at Oshiage Station, and it was uncommon to see them on the Isesaki Line. Tobu would introduce the 50050 series to subway through services in 2006, but the 30000 series remained in service as it could be split into 6 and 4 car trains, which was necessary as 10-car trains are not supported past Minami-Kurihashi and Tatebayashi stations. The fleet was gradually transferred to the Tojo Line from 2011 to 2015, and converted to permanent 10-car formations at the same time. All 150 cars remains in service on above ground service patterns on the Tojo Line, they no longer enter any subway lines.
