Description
The 2700 Series (2700系) is a limited express type DMU operated by JR Shikoku since 2019.

Designed to replace the aging 2000 series base variant cars, the 2700 series is a natural pendulum type tilting train with the same basic structure as the 2600 series. The air spring type tilting device on the 2600 series was found to be insufficient for the long curves on the Dosan Line, therefore the 2700 series would be mass produced instead. While most of the equipment is shared with the 2600 series, it is not possible for cars of the two times to operate together due to the different tilting devices. Joint operations with the 2000 series is also not supported despite it also being a pendulum controlled car. 41 cars were produced in 2019 and 2020, which replaced the fleet of 2000 series base variant vehicles. Most services are operated as 2-car formations, with more popular routes operating as 3 cars. The series does not have any middle cars, but instead 3 types of leading cars. The 2800 type, which partly has green car seating, can be coupled to leading end of the 2750 type to create a 3-car formation. 2700 series vehicles currently operate a number of intercity services in the south and east of Shikoku, including Uzushio and Nampu. They also serve limited express Shimanto and Ashizuri, which partly run on tracks owned by Tosa Kuroshio Railway. 2 cars are owned by the third sector company, but the entire fleet is operated by JR Shikoku. The newer variant of the 2000 series (N2000) are still in service, it is uncertain whether JR Shikoku intends to produce additional 2700 series cars to replace them in the future.
