Description
The 815 Series (815系) is a commuter type EMU operated by JR Kyushu since 1999.

This type was developed to serve quieter lines outside of the Fukuoka-Kitakyushu Metropolitan Area, it is compatible with one-man operations and can easily respond to fluctuating demand patterns. The 815 series was also the first JR Group train to adopt Hitachi's A-train platform, which is characterised by it's double skinned aluminium body. It is equipped with the same electric coupler as the 811, 813, 817, BEC819, and 821 series, enabling for joint operations with a significant portion of JR Kyushu's fleet. The interior cabin is made from solid aluminium to match the exterior, and installed with long seating. Each seat has individual cushions and backrests, and those not in-front of the windows are equipped with headrests. The type is composed entirely of 2-car sets, and has one western-style accessible toilet per set. A total of 52 cars were produced in 26 sets, they are currently split between the Kumamoto and Oita vehicle centers. The 815 series are deployed around Kumamoto on the Kagoshima and Hōhi main lines, in addition to the Nippō Main Line in Oita Prefecture
