Keihan 2400 Series / 京阪2400系

The 2400 Series (2400系) is a commuter EMU operated by Keihan Electric Railway since 1969.

Another one of the "egg-shaped" trains developed by Keihan, the 2400 series is a improved version of the 2000 and 2200 series. It was the first commuter train in the Kansai area to be equipped with air conditioning at production, following the first train in the Kanto area just one year prior. The specifications are largely identical to the 2200 series, having the same running equipment installed. Electrical equipment on the type has dual voltage specifications, thus avoiding further works being necessary when the voltage was raised on the network. Eight small air conditioning units were installed on the roof of each car, these units look significantly different from the ones retrofitted onto the other types of "egg-shaped" trains. There were 6 7-car trains manufactured for a total of 42 cars. All vehicles had their control equipment upgraded in the 1990s, and pantographs were replaced in the following decade. However, the 2400 series never had wheelchair spaces installed, unlike the 1000 series. One set was scrapped in 2021 to secure spare parts for the remaining units, which are in regular use on the Keihan Main Line. While the company has not published a plan for withdrawal, the increasing difficulty in obtaining parts for maintenance will force a slow scrapping of existing vehicles.
