Description
The YC1 Series (YC1系) is a hybrid DMU operated by JR Kyushu since 2018.

Developed in conjuction with the 821 series EMUs, the YC1 series is JR Kyushu's first hybrid train. The technology used is similar to the designs of JR East, and shares the basic principals of hybrid cars. Batteries are installed on board that can be charged via regenerative braking, which then can be used to power the electric motors. Fuel consumption can thus be reduced by around 20% compared to JNR era diesel railcars, while diesel-electric powered vehicles have lower maintenance costs compared to liquid diesel transmission. The car body, air conditioning equipment, and interior cabin are all based on the 821 series. Most of the passenger cabin is fitted with long seats, with a small number of cross seats near the end of some cars. The long seats are equipped with extended backrests and those near the doors also have headrests. 52 cars have been produced to date in 26 sets of 2 car trains, manufacturing is ongoing is scheduled to continue until 2027. The series are currently in use in the Nagasaki area, where they are also operated as 3-car trains by splitting one set and attaching it's cars onto two other sets. They carry out the majority of services on the unelectrified sections of the Nagasaki Main Line and Omura Line, in addition to some services on the Sasebo Line.
