Description
The 2000 Series (2000系) is a limited express type DMU operated by JR Shikoku since 1989.

Developed to compete against the rapidly expanding highway network in Shikoku, the 2000 series has tilting capabilities to improve speeds in mountainous regions. A prototype car called the "TSE" (Trans-Shikoku Experimental) was produced in 1989, and is claimed by JR Shikoku as the world's first tilting DMU. After successful testing runs, mass production of the type began in 1990. In the 2000 series there is a non-through type leading car that has green seats, and another through-type leading car with all ordinary class seats. From 1995-1998, an improved variant known as the N2000 series was produced, these feature slightly more powerful engines and an improved top speed of 130km/h. The total number of vehicles is 80 cars across all variants, and includes 4 owned by third sector company Tosa Kuroshio Railway. The 2000 series are currently in service on Ashizuri and Uwakai, often with a mix of 2000 and N2000 variant cars in the same train. Only 11 of 61 2000 series mass produced cars remain in service, in addition to all 16 N2000 series cars. JR Shikoku has indicated the that type is likely to be retired around 2030.
