Description
The BEC819 Series (BEC819系) is a BEMU operated by JR Kyushu since 2016.

JR Kyushu had produced a prototype of the 817 series equipped with AC batteries in 2012, which subsequently underwent testing on short distance lines lacking electrification. The BEC819 series would become the mass produced commercial vehicles developed after successful testing of the prototype. The basic design is similar to the 817 series, and uses the same "CT" logo as JR Kyushu's other commuter trains. It has been given the nickname "DENCHA" derived from "Dual Energy Charge Train". The 0 series was introduced onto the northern section of the Chikuho Main Line between Orio and Wakamatsu Stations. A second batch was introduced onto the Kashii Line in 2019, these vehicles have a higher capacity battery and the interior was changed to be similar to the 821 series. The BEC819 series also operates direct services onto the Kagoshima Main Line and electrified sections of the Chikuho Main Line, where the pantograph is raised and it operates like a regular EMU. As of current, the total number of cars is 36 arranged in 18 2-car trains. It is uncertain whether additional vehicles will be manufactured in the future for other lines.
