Super Caracal - Variant B

Description
Super Caracal - Variant B (2024-...)
The "Big Floppa" is slowly evolving. Do not hesitate to drop your constructive comment.
Work in progress!
I am working on all systems of the SC-B. The Variant B can be seen as a global update.
Next update: Felida Integrated Cam/Map/Nav/Weather/Com/Radio/Beacon Control System.

How to cold-start the Super Caracal?

The controls are situated on the bottom central panel in the cockpit.
0. Lights? Main switches are located on the central upper panel.
1. Main Battery On: All systems now have electricty.
2. Avionics On: Cockpit and control systems are now on and operational.
3. Engines On: The three turbines and their fuel pumps are turned on. The central turbines has a slighty different "gear ratio" than the two "external" turbines. The central turbine does not turn on or off at the exact same time. The "T RPS" depicts the "average" turbine rotations per second. The red zone (low rps) is small and the grey zone is large because the turbine power can be adjusted manually (position 3 per default). At position 3, the "T RPS" will stabilise in the grey zone, just above the red zone.
When the turbines are starting, you can use the ignition booster ("IG BST") to fasten the turbine reaching their equilibrium RPS (around 35 RPS in Turbine Power Postion 3, "T Pw 3").
4. Rotor Clutch On: The clutches of the front and rear rotors are "synched". Both rotors will revolve at the same speed, 60 RPS mostly always. "R RPS" shows the rotation speed of both rotor. The red zone is large and the green zone is small. You will fall like a stone if your rotor "R RPS" is in the red (<60 RPS).
5. When the turbines and rotors RPS are in the green zone, gently tap the up key on your keyboard or controller. The turbines and rotors PIDs provide automated controls and their values are shown on two small gauges on the cockpit. Once they stop "jumping" around, the SC-B tells you... Please, fly me, I am ready to run...

How to fly the Super Caracal?

The Super Caracal uses its two rotors to fly like an helicopter "when needed". However, the thrust of the turbines (how much they push ahead) can be adjsuted to push the aircraft ahead and reach high speeds. This thrust is set at 0% when you start the SC, so you can lift off like an helicopter.

There are two modes for flying depending on the thrust, from 0% to 100%. The thrust can be adjusted using the throttle in the cockpit or "1" and "2" from the pilot or co-pilot seats.

HELI mode: (the turbine thrust is between 0% and 50%)
W/S: adjust the pitch in degrees. Go forward and backward.
A/D: adjust the roll in degrees. Go left and right (transition, no rotation, almost...)
Up/Down: adjust the collective. Go up and down like an helicopter. (from -10 to 10 m/s)
Left/Right: adjust the angle of the back propellers to turn left and right.
Below 20-30 knots, I mostly use Left/Right (Yaw) to turn and use A/D (Roll) to adjust the auto-roll.
Above 20-30 knots, using A/D (Roll) is useful to perform long and smooth turns.

GYRO mode: (the turbine thrust is between 50% and 100%)
W/S: adjust the pitch in degrees. Go up and down like a plane. (from -30 to 30 m/s)
A/D: adjust the roll. Allow to turn left and right with nice and long curves to change the heading.
Left/Right: adjust the turning rate. I gently tap left or right to fasten the curve when fully-pressed A/D (Roll) is not sufficient.
Up/Down: inoperents.
Currently, the autopilot only works in GYRO mode. wip

How to use the deck, hook, crane...?
First, you need to open the cargo bay hatch. The switch is located just next to the right leg of the pilot. The landing gear must be retracted to open the cargo bay hatch.
Then, tilt the control monitor located on the bottom central panel. Four buttons allow to change the current control page.

You want to reach that top speed?

The Turbine power (not thrust) has 7 positions. Power 3 is per default. The turbine power can be adjusted with a touchscreen just in front of the pilot and co-pilot seats.
Power 1 and 2 are not usefull in HELI mode. The SC cannot fly like an helicopter with so few power. However, they are useful in GYRO mode for low fuel consumption. Unloaded, the SC can fly at "Power 1" in GYRO mode. However, when loaded, even "Power 2" may not be sufficient to keep altitude in GYRO mode with thrust at 100%.
Power 4 and 5 allow to lift heavier loads in HELI mode and to reach higher speeds in GYRO mode.
Power 6 and 7 can only be set in GYRO mode.

You are very high in altitude and you want to descend fast?
Try desengaging the rotor clutch. I keep "S" pressed to help not dive with a pitch below -70°... Then, around 700-800 feet (more if you are really descending fast), I re-engage the rotor clutch... :D

You are hovering just above your take-off spot and you want to quickly gain altitude instead of speed?
- Incline the SC backwards (positive pitch of 20-30°, like if you wanted to go backwards in HELI mode) using the "S" key and maintain it pressed.
- Mostly at the same time, press and keep pressed the "1" key to increase the thrust to 100%.
- Increase the turbine power to 7, with the "S" key still pressed.
I manage to have an almost "vertical" lift depending on the short duration between the moments the "S" key and the "1" key are pressed.

The Philosophy of the Felida Series
Main objectives are flight stability, fast response and wide operability in search and rescue.
Turbines automatically adjust their speed and power to the required level. Rotor rotation speed is set at 60 rotations per second, almost always.
ALTitude autopilots are always on. ATTitude autopilots are always on. Very stable flight, fast response and versatility in operations. Automatic collective and clutches are always on. PIDs always control and adjust the aTtitude (pitch, roll, yaw) and the aLtitude of the aircraft.
Pitch, roll and yaw are controlled and bounded for flight stability reasons. It is why you cannot do a full loop or a full roll with the SC-B.

I'm not sure if a recent update changed how this monster behaves, but it seems to enjoy exploding itself now. I can't quite narrow down the cause, but it often occurs during startup, landing, and changing RPS.

this thing is a beast and i love it, its like a abomination

nice helicopter, just a tip, you don't need the compressor starters running constantly (even though it's only a little bit of parasitic power draw and really don't impact performance), they're safe to shut off once the engine starts combustion (which is around 0.5 RPS)

This is an absolutely amazing creation and now performs the bulk of my operations on a dedicated server! We aren't able to fully shut it down though, an engine somewhere near the rear rotor keeps running even with the main battery shut off. Could there be a logic disconnected maybe?

hey, just wondering but would it possible to make a larger 4 rotor version of this. the idea i had in mind is everything the super caracal already has but larger, a larger rescue winch with more harness, maybe even doubling it. a larger, or more, hooks to increase the free carry weight, and a higher cruise speed.

Odd question but how do I turn it off I shut off power the turbines and everything but the engines wont stop and I dont see a rotor brake or anything.

To refuel, the fuel hose is located in the central beam of the tail. It is the only way to refuel currently. All controls are on the touchscreen on the central bottom panel. 1. Bring doyn the fuel hose. 2. Manually connect the fuel hose of the SC-B to the fuel reserve of your choice with a fluid hose (red "cable"). 3. Turn on the pumping of the fuel reserve. 4. Turn on the fuel pump of the SC-B. I hope it is helpful :D
Cheers and enjoy your flights.
