Description
The 50 Series (50系) is a subway vehicle operated by Kyoto Municipal Subway on the Tōzai Line.

A light metro type in service since 1997, the 50 series is the inaugural type for the Tōzai Line. With carriage lengths of 16 meters and a width just short of 2.5 meters, it is a typical mini-subway vehicle seen across many of Japan's secondary cities. In addition, the specifications of the vehicle are similar to Keihan's 800 series, as per a through running agreement between the Tōzai Line and Keihan Keishin Line. In contrast to the Karasuma Line, which uses conventional sized vehicles and have through running operations with Kintetsu's commuter lines. VVVF control system is adopted with standard motors, instead of the linear motors found on newer light metro types. 102 cars were produced between the initial batch and a second batch introduced with the 2004 extension. All vehicles are arranged in 6 carriage sets, and they are exclusively used on the Tōzai Line. Keihan's 800 series also operate on the Tōzai Line until Yamashina Station, where they run onto the Keishin Line. All 50 series vehicles continue to the Tōzai Line's terminus at Rokujizō Station instead, and do not run on Keihan lines.
