Description
The 811 Series (811系) is a suburban type EMU operated by JR Kyushu since 1989.

The first type introduced by JR Kyushu onto the Kagoshima Line system, the 811 series debuted with the 1989 Fukuoka Asia-Pacific Expo. It was produced to increase the number of rapid trains in the Kitakyushu-Fukuoka Metro Area, and to replace some aging JNR vehicles. The type was given a modernized look distinct from JNR trains to represent a new era for rail transportation in Kyushu. Power consumption was reduced by 30% compared to the 415 series, which JR Kyushu had inherited in large numbers. A total of 112 cars were manufactured between 1989 and 1993, they are arranged in 28 sets of 4 cars each. As the type was primarily intended to serve as express trains, reversible cross seats were installed. There were plans to produce 3 car and 2 car variants of this series, but they were abandoned in favour of new types compatible in joint operations. Major renovation works on the series began in 2016 targeting all vehicles, aiming to extend the service life of the type. The control system was replaced with a VVVF inverter system, more efficient motors were installed and the braking system was changed from dynamic to regenerative. Along with the installation of LED lighting, power consumption was further reduced by 30%, to around half of the 415 series. The exterior was also revamped with JR Kyushu's established "CT" logo, and the side stripe was changed to blue. In response to increasing rush hour congestion, long seats will be installed in all cars. 811 series cars have been gradually refurbished, with a scheduled completion date of 2028 for the whole fleet. Currently, the type operates both local and rapid trains in and around the Kitakyushu-Fukuoka area, in addition to the Sasebo Line. All cars except 1 accident damaged set are in service.
