Description
The 5000 Series (5000系) is an EMU operated by JR Shikoku since 2003.

This type was manufactured for Rapid Marine Liner services, which operates across the Seto-Ohashi Bridge linking Honshu with Shikoku. The leading car on the Takamatsu side is double-decker, with green seats on the upper deck, and reserved ordinary seats on the lower deck. Based on JR East's E217 series green cars, it has a custom front cab design unique to this type. The other two cars on the Okayama side are unreserved standard cars based on JR West's 233-2000 series, they are very similar in exterior and interior appearance. All formations are arranged as 3-car sets, and there are a total of 6 trains in service (18 cars). Marine Liner is jointly operated by JR West and JR Shikoku, and the 3-car 5000 series sets are coupled to 2-car 233-5000 series sets owned by JR West to form a 5-car train. Some rush hour services operate as 7 cars, and during holidays and special periods there may be formations of 8 cars or 9 cars. In the past the 3-car variant of JR West 223-5000 series were coupled to the 5000 series to operate as 6-car trains, but these were removed due to declining passenger numbers.
