Description
The 713 Series (713系) is a EMU manufactured by JNR in 1983 and currently operated by JR Kyushu.

Developed for local transportation needs on Kyushu's AC electrified main lines, the 713 series is a 2-car commuter train suited for short to medium distance trips. 8 cars were produced in 1983 as prototypes for testing runs, and entered commercial service the following year. The 713 series was the first JNR train to use AC regenerative braking, and it is fitted with semi-cross seating layout. Initially, it was planned for the type to be mass produced for the Nagasaki Main Line and Sasebo Line, but JNR's worsening financial situation led to further manufacturing being cancelled. To save costs, retiring express cars would have their equipment reused and fitted into a new body, this led to the creation of the 413 and 717 series instead. The 713 series were also designed to be compatible with operating in a 3-car formation (1M2T), but no middle cars were ever manufactured. In 1996, the existing sets were transferred to the newly-opened Miyazaki Airport Line, and were mostly used as shuttle trains between the airport and Miyazaki Station. They were given the nickname "Sunshine Miyazaki" and a red livery to fit. All sets were renovated between 2008 and 2010 to extend their service life, but by 2022 two sets were pulled out of regular use. As of current, the remaining vehicles are used on the Miyazaki Airport Line, in addition to less frequent runs on the Nippō Main Line up to Nobeoka Station. Full withdrawal of the type is likely within the next few years.
