JR Shikoku 2600 Series / JR四国2600系

The 2600 Series (2600系) is a limited express type DMU operated by JR Shikoku since 2017.

This type was manufactured to replace the 2000 series railcars which had been in service since 1989. Equipped with an experimental air spring type tilting device, which is a simpler and more cost effective option than the standard pendulum type in theory. The exterior design is based on the concept of "Neo-Japonism", a modernized interpretation of traditional Japanese decors. The deep red decals are intended to stand out in the natural environment of Shikoku, while it's combination with gold is traditionally believed to be auspicious. Each car is equipped with two Komatsu engines for higher performance on Shikoku's mountainous lines. Two pre-production sets of 2 cars were produced in 2017 and began testing runs on various routes. However, it became evident that the air spring type tilting device was unsuited for sections with many tight curves such as the Dosan Line, as the volume of air required to adjust the tilting device was too high. As a result, mass production of this type was cancelled, and only the 4 pre-production cars exist. The vehicles were placed on limited express Uzushio between Takamatsu and Tokushima on the Kōtoku Line, which has relatively gentle curves.
