JR Kyushu 885 Series / JR九州885系

The 885 Series (885系) is a limited express type EMU operated by JR Kyushu.

A tilting train introduced for Kamome in 2000, the 885 series was based designed on Hitachi's A-train modular platform. Kamome had previously used 783 and 485 series trains, which had no tilting capabilities and thus significantly inferior performance on mountainous lines. The 885 series is constructed from aluminium alloy with a double-skin structure. Exterior appearance of the train was designed by the Eiji Mitooka, who also worked on the 883 series. The rounded front is reminiscent of Shinkansen trains and inspired by the German ICE3. Mitooka is a friend of Alexander Neumeister, and was able to secure his approval for the design. The 885 series is arranged in fixed 6 car sets, the first car is split between a green car compartment and standard seats, while the rest of the train is all standard class seating. A second batch was produced for Sonic from 2001-2003, some formations were only 5 cars in length at the time of manufacturing, but all of them became 6 cars by 2003. In 2004, a Kamome train derailed after colliding with a large rock fallen onto the tracks in heavy rain, the first three cars of the formation was scrapped after the accident, and replacement cars were manufactured. The total number of cars is 69 cars in 11 sets, including three replacement cars. The 885 series currently serve on various limited express services on the Nagasaki Main Line, Sasebo Line, and Nippō Main Line.
