Description
The 821 Series (821系) is a commuter EMU operated by JR Kyushu.

The latest AC commuter train for the Kagoshima Line system, the 821 series was introduced in 2019. Equipped with silicon-carbide MOSFET transistors for the main circuit, the electricity consumption of this type is around 70% lower compared to the 415 series. The interior has long seating with extended backrests, seats that are not located below windows also have a headrest. All 821 sets carriages are arranged in 3-car sets, with one accessible toilet per train. 821 series sets are capable of joint operations with the 811, 813, 815, 817 and BEC819 series. The total number of cars produced is 30, arranged in 10 trains. All formations were initially placed at the Minami-Fukuoka Depot, running on the Greater Fukuoka portion of the Kagoshima Main Line, often coupled with the 4 car 811 series. Since production of the type was concluded in 2022, all trains were transferred to the Kumamoto Depot. They currently operate on the Kumamoto portion of the Kagoshima Main Line (including direct trains to Fukuoka and beyond), as well as parts of the Chikuho and Hōhi main lines.
