Description
The 383 Series (383系) is a Limited Express type EMU operated by JR Central since 1995.

Developed for Limited Express Shinano running between Nagoya and Matsumoto/Nagano, the 383 series is adopts a computerised tilting system to improve speeds on the mountainous Chūō Main Line (West section). It was produced in a basic formation of 6 cars, with additional formations arranged in both 4 cars and 2 cars. The 6 car sets have a panorama front car on the Nagano side and walk-through type leading car on the Nagoya side, which connects to the 4 car sets to form a 10 car train. both 4 and 2 car sets have walk-through type leading cars on both sides, allowing the length of formations to be more freely adjusted. The panorama type cars have green car seating, and features a large front window for viewing, with the drivers cab only taking up space on the left side. Some operations are carried out with the 4 and 2 car sets coupled together, in order to equalize mileage between the basic and additional sets. There are a total of 76 cars, with all vehicles of this type operating Shinano in addition to a few seasonal and home liner services. As the type has reached around 30 years of service, JR Central has announced the 385 series as it's successor, the production of which is scheduled to begin in FY2026.
