Description
The KiHa 127 Series (キハ127系) is a general type DMU operated by JR West.

Introduced in 2009 as a part of the Kishin Line improvement project, the KiHa 127 series aimed to modernize rail services on the line and improve ridership. The eastern portion of the Kishin Line serves as commuter rail for Himeji, but with infrequent service and low speeds ridership had steadily fallen over the years. In 2007, an agreement was reached between JR West and local governments to share the costs of improvement works to be carried out. While initially desiring electrification of the section up to Harima-Shingu Station within greater Himeji, local municipalities settled with introducing new diesel railcars in light with potential costs. The KiHa 127 series is a fully accessible model railcar with semi-cross seating layout. It is divided into two variants, the single car dual cab KiHa 122 type, and the KiHa 127 type which are 2-car sets. The top operating speed is 100km/h, in line with the Kishin Line's speed limit, which was raised from 85km/h. There a total of 19 cars divided into 6 single cars and 7 2-car sets. All vehicles are used on the portion of the Kishin Line between Kōzuki Station and Himeji Station.
