And they were able to shoot me from below through gaps in the buildings.

No I had six ai allies and they all died. I took out a few enemies as well, but with my allies dead I ran in the opposite direction since fighting that many in the open was suicide. It was not as good of a place to make a stand as I thought it was. Some of them had jump jets and then the buildings ended up getting knocked down.
