JR Central 315 Series / JR東海315系

The 315 Series (315系) is a commuter EMU operated by JR Central.

A new generation vehicle introduced in 2022 for the purpose of replace the 211, 213, and 311 Series. which had exceeded 30 years in operation. Manufactured exclusively by JR Central's subsidiary Nippon Sharyo, it is the first vehicle to use the company's "N-QUALIS" vehicle concept. The outer panels made of stainless steel was made smoother and laser wielding was used to improve the appearance. The windows are constructed with glass that blocks 99% of infrared and UV radiation, which allows sun shades to be omitted. For the first time in Japan, AI technology is used to provide continuous monitoring and adjustments to the air conditioning system to maintain optimal temperatures at all times. To date, the 315 series have been produced in two variants. The 8 car 0 series variant is deployed on Chūō Main Line up to Nakatsugawa Station, and sometimes operates through services on the third sector Aichi Loop Line. Commercial use on the Tōkaidō Main Line begun in March 2024. The Kansai Main Line and Taketoyo Line has services operated by the 4 car 3000 series variant. There are around 240 vehicles in service per latest data, and the type continues to be produced.
