Description
The 700 Series is a light rail/tram vehicle operated by Keihan Electric Railway on the Otsu lines.

The type was constructed in an effort to root out non-air conditioned cars running on the Otsu lines. As a part of a agreement with Kyoto Municipal Subway for future through operations, Keihan had committed to raising it's 600V DC electrification to 1500V. Therefore the 700 series was equipped with compatibility with both voltage levels. The car body used was recycled from the earlier 350 series and 500 series, however the company classifies the 700 series as a new built and not a modification. Almost all the running equipment had been replaced, and the rated motor output was increased to allow the type to operate on steep gradients. A total of 10 cars were manufactured, organized into 2-car sets. Commercial operation of the 700 series begun in 1992, running local and semi-express services on the Keishin Line. Since the start of through running operations between the Keishin Line and Kyoto Municipal Subway's Tōzai Line, the 700 series have been diverted to the Ishiyama-Sakamoto Line. Modifications were carried out in 2003 to allow for one man operation, and all 10 cars are in current service.
