Description
The 8000 Series (8000系) is a Limited Express type EMU operated by Keihan Electric Railway.

Nicknamed the "Elegant Saloon", the 8000 Series was designed with the aim of creating a flagship commuter vehicle to represent the company. With the opening of the Ōtō Line in 1989, the number of Limited Express services was increased on the network, and additional rolling stock was required. Unlike JR Group and some other private railways, limited express trains on Keihan lines are not classified as a premium service and cost no additional fee to board. Therefore the 8000 series are built for medium to long distance commuter traffic, providing a higher level of comfort compared to standard commuter cars. The interior layout is mostly cross seating, long seats were installed at the front and end of the cabin in later renewal works to increase capacity. All long seats have winged headrests and a backrest the same height as cross seats. Production of the 8000 series continued after the initial batch of additional vehicles, and it was decided to fully replace Keihan's fleet of the older 3000 series type (not to be confused with the new 3000 series 2nd generation introduced in 2008). Initially manufactured as 7-car sets, an extra double decker vehicle was added to each set by 1998 in response to high congestion levels. 10 sets of the type were completed, for a total of 80 vehicles. Starting from 2017, one intermediate vehicle per set was remodelled as the new Premium Car, which is fully reserved and requires an additional fee.
