JR Central 373 Series / JR東海373系

The 373 Series (373系) is a Limited Express type EMU operated by JR Central.

Operating in the Shizouka area since 1995, the 373 series was developed for express services on the Minobu and Iida lines. Designed as a versatile vehicle suitable for a range of operations, it replaced the JNR 165 series in the region. The two double doors on each side installed is more typical of regional and suburban trains, and there is no door separating the main cabin and the doorways. This design allows the 373 Series to also operate effectively as rapid and local trains. Interior seating is in a mostly 2+2 convertible recliner seat layout, with some cars having bays of 4 with a table. Linen curtains are installed on all windows, a relatively uncommon feature in modern rolling stock. A total of 42 cars were produced, and all are formed in fixed 3-car consists. Services operated by the type includes Limited Express Fujikawa between Shizouka and Kōfu, Limited Express Inaji on the Iida Line, and some local services on the Iida and Tōkaidō Main lines. The type was formally used on Limited Express and night trains on the Tōkaidō Main Line, all such services have been abolished since 2009. All formations are currently active, and there are no plans for retirement. While it is possible that Fujikawa services may be reduced in the near future due to low demand, the 373 Series is compatible with all of JR Central's electrified lines, and are thus more likely to be reassigned than withdrawn entirely.
